The Ultimate Guide to Free and Budget Friendly Summer Days Out in the New Forest

calendar_month July 16, 2026

Summer is a fantastic time to visit the New Forest, whether you are travelling with a partner, as a group or with the whole family. We’ve put together some suggestions of free and budget-friendly things to do in and around the New Forest so you can make those all important memories this season, without breaking the bank! Make sure to let us know what you get up to, and if you have any suggestions not already on the list…

Completely Free Family Friendly Fun

Spot the New Forest Big 5

Did you know that the forest is home to a variety of wildlife? As well as the famous New Forest Ponies, there are plenty of cows, deer and donkeys to spot on your travels around the forest’s heathland, woodland and villages. You may want to return during the autumn to spot the pigs as they are encouraged to roam and eat the fallen acorns that are toxic to other wildlife.

If you do head out to find the Big 5, please remember to follow the Forest Code, and to respect the animals. Do not feed or touch the wildlife and remember to pack away any rubbish and take it with you when you leave.

Take a walk on the wild side

There are plenty of forest trails to explore, whether you are looking for something the little ones can join you on, or if you fancy something a little more challenging, or if you simply want a walk that immerses you in the beauty of your surroundings. Some of our favourites include Bolton’s Bench, Blackwater Arboretum, Knightwood Oak and Hatchet Pond.

Play Areas without the Price Tag

If your little ones need to let off steam, there are lots of local play areas to choose from in and around the forest. Take a visit to the Bolderwood play trail, let them loose at Milford on Sea’s play area, or head to New Milton’s recreation ground.

Miles of Beach to Explore

The New Forest isn’t just about the trees and wildlife, there’s plenty of coastal areas to discover as well during your visit. Choose from Lepe beach, Milford on Sea, Barton on Sea, Calshot Beach or nearby Avon Beach & Hengistbury Head for a free day out this summer.

Cycling Routes

If you’re bringing along your bikes, there are plenty of cycle trails to enjoy. The best traffic-free routes include Brockenhurst, Burley, Rhinefield and the Ornamental Drive. You can hire bikes locally, if you still fancy the activity but haven’t got your own.

Dial up the Romance

If you’re visiting with a partner and are looking for free activities to enjoy together, why not head out to a beauty spot at sunset with a picnic and enjoy the stunning surroundings? Pretty spots off the beaten trail include Hatchet Pond and Acres Down. Or you could try a spot of stargazing (the New Forest is a recognised Dark Sky area).

Trails and Challenges

Fantastic for families, or those young at heart, why not take part in a local scavenger hunt or geocaching? You could challenge the kids to spot different birds, trees or bugs on your walk.

Rain or Shine

British weather can be unpredictable, even during the summer months. If it does rain during your visit, there’s still plenty to see and do without breaking the bank. Why not explore the village of Lyndhurst or Lymington, visit local churches, window shop in independant bookshops or browse an art gallery?

Free Seasonal Events

Summer is a brilliant time for free local events. Make sure to check out villages fetes, family fun days (including our own Summer Sounds (live music Friday evenings 24th July – 28th August) and Beaulieu Summer Fayre), local craft fayres and free national park guided activities. Many of the attractions in the local area will have additional events added to their offering, so it’s a good time to check these out (even though an initial cost may apply for entry).
